Blue (they/them) joined the University of Sheffield in 2023 after receiving a studentship from the Centre for Care. The PhD studentship is for a qualitative study responding to the theme of “Digital Technology in Care and Caring Relationships”.
In their PhD Blue researches digital technologies used for monitoring and surveillance in institutional mental health settings, how it contributes to the control of inpatients’ time and how this might relate to iatrogenic harm. They are currently reviewing these research questions and designing the study in collaboration with psychiatric survivors who have been monitored by surveillance technology in mental health settings.
Blue has an undergraduate degree in European Studies from King’s College London, a master’s in Cultural and Critical Studies from Birkbeck University of London and in Social Research from the University of Sheffield. They are supervised by Prof Kate Hamblin and Dr Kate Weiner.
