Care and Place: older people’s housing and communities and their social care needs, care use, and care costs
Housing is an important part of the broader care context for people with care needs. Many older people in England live in poor quality, insecure, or unsafe housing. This webinar presents findings from a study led by the Care Policy and Evaluation centre at the LSE (Care and Place (CAPE)) which looked at the role of non-specialised housing condition and quality as a social determinant of care need for people in England aged 65 and older, its role as a barrier or facilitator to formal and unpaid care use, and the inequalities in those relationships. The webinar also presents findings on the associated economic costs for adult social care of housing problems. In recognition that the wider local environment is also an important part of the care context, the webinar will also describe the follow on study from CAPE which explores the role of local area support and amenities in reducing inequalities in unmet need for care and improving access to care.
About the presenter
Dr Nicola Brimblecombe is Assistant Professorial Research Fellow in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on unpaid carers, housing and care, and unmet need and inequalities in care. Current studies include on housing, neighbourhood and care; integrated support for unpaid carers; and young carers and whole family approaches.
