About the seminar
We contribute to emerging understanding of the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies on the employment of disabled people. We present evidence from AI-EMPOWERED, a multi-stage mixed methods research project. A systematic literature review synthesises international evidence from across disciplines on the employment effects of AI and automation technologies for disabled people. Primary data collection combines two surveys of employers (n = 1,029) and disabled people (n > 1,200) with more than 110 in-depth interviews capturing perspectives from academic experts, non-governmental organizations, charities, government departments, employers, employee representation groups, and the lived experiences of disabled people. We identify key differences in experiences of AI and its relative benefits reflecting the diversity of disability, with organizational factors and wider governance and legal frameworks mediating effects. We point toward the importance of disabled people’s organisations, user-led advocacy and employee voice in realising the potential and mitigating risks of AI and automation technologies for the working lives of disabled people.
