About the seminar

Article 31 of the EU Charter of Fundamental rights states that “Every worker has the right to working conditions which respect his or her health, safety and dignity.” Yet, the lack of hygiene facilities available to mobile workers, including community care workers, is a serious health and well-being concern. This presentation will report on a study of mobile workers’ access to hygiene facilities and the challenges of accessing hygiene facilities on the move, mobile workers’ hygiene needs, and where mobile workers are accessing facilities and how this is negotiated. The focus of the presentation will be on community care workers’ hygiene experiences, how the role impacts on their experiences, and the similarities and differences compared to other occupations.

About the presenter

Sophie Rutter is a senior lecturer at the Information School, University of Sheffield. She has conducted extensive research in the area of hand hygiene and access to hygiene facilities, investigating different user groups (school children, office workers, mobile workers) as well as developing novel evaluation methods. Her research investigates how people use information, so as to inform communication strategies and technology development. She is also interested in inclusive user research and is working on a project that aims to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in usability testing.
